2. Yoga Practice for a Modern World
Restoring your flow of energy
You may not notice at first when your energy starts to shut down. If you are sensitive too much screen time and too long a telephone call can be cause enough. For the hardier amongst us too many late nights on Netflix and too much take-away food can do it. You are sitting at your desk or you are walking down the street and you just don't feel well. I suggest the following wonderful Kundalini kriya which takes 17 minutes 'to do' and then allow yourself 5 minutes to rest after.
Reverse Adi Shakti kriya
To begin take a comfortable cross-legged position and raise your right hand above your head. Make sure the hand is above the crown of your head and 6-9 inches away. Your right hand is now blessing you. Raise your left hand and place it by your shoulder, palm facing outward as if you are taking an oath. The left hand is now blessing the Universe. See photograph one (top of series below).
Breathe long and slow in this first position for 11 minutes and allow yourself to build toward the One Minute Breath. Kiss the breath as it comes into you and feel 'hugged' by the experience. You will know if you are doing this fully enough as the taste in your mouth will change (I usually experience this after 10 minutes).
After 11 minutes in position one inhale and transition into position two as in photograph two (middle). In this position the arms are extended straight out, parallel to the ground with the palms facing downward. Keep the arms strong and straight and breathe that same long, slow, 'hugging' breath for 3 minutes.
Next inhale and raise arms straight up and stretch. Palms are flat and facing forward as in photograph three (bottom). Try not to bend the elbows. Stay here for 3 minutes continuing the same long 'hugging' breathing.
To finish, keep arms up, inhale deeply and retain your breath. Stretch, lift the spine and, if you can, hold the breath for 15 seconds. Exhale with Cannon Breath which is a sudden, rapid and noisy expulsion of air out through the mouth. Repeat this three times and then rest in Sivasan.
After practising Reverse Adi Shakti many yogis and yoginis will feel something - and fine if not. You may literally feel energy channels open up and if you don't you are still receiving the benefit. In the infinitely wise words of Yogi Bhajan (founder of Kundalini yoga) this kriya will change you from the inside out. You are mentally, hypnotically blessing yourself and it will affect your internal energy flow and the magnetic field around you.
It can be interesting to think of this magnetic field around us as both our own and shared. This opens up the very interesting conversation of whom we are 'in field with' and how well we take care of our own magnetism. Reverse Adi Shakti Kriya is a very good start.
